EPUB to Markdown FAQ
Are EPUB 2 and EPUB 3 both supported?
Yes. Smarkdown reads the EPUB spine in either standard and preserves chapter order in the output.
Does it handle DRM-protected EPUBs?
No. Smarkdown can only convert DRM-free EPUBs. Files purchased from Kindle, Apple Books, Kobo, or similar stores typically have DRM and will need to be in a different format.
Are chapters and structure preserved?
Yes. Each chapter becomes a Markdown section in the original spine order. Chapter titles map to H1 or H2 headings. Internal cross-references are kept.
What about images, figures, and tables?
Image references are kept using Markdown image syntax. The image binaries themselves are not embedded in the output (Markdown is plain text). Tables convert to Markdown tables.
