How to Convert Image to Markdown
Upload your image
JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP, or WebP. Higher resolution and good contrast give the best OCR results.
OCR processing
Tesseract (the gold-standard open-source OCR engine) extracts the text in original reading order.
Get clean Markdown
Download or copy the extracted text. Ready to paste into Claude, ChatGPT, your notes, or your code editor.
Why OCR Image to Markdown?
A photo of text is a wall of pixels. OCR turns it back into something you can search, edit, paste, and feed to AI.
Screenshots that resist copy-paste
Video frames, paywalled content, error messages from broken software, slides someone shared as a JPG. Get the text out without retyping.
Photos of documents
Receipts, contracts, handwritten notes, business cards. Snap a photo, run it through OCR, get searchable text.
Whiteboard captures
Photo of the meeting whiteboard? OCR pulls the text out so you can clean it up, share it, or feed it to Claude for synthesis.
Feed images to text-only LLMs
Even with vision-capable models everywhere, OCR is often more reliable for dense text. Convert first, then prompt with clean Markdown.
Image to Markdown FAQ
What image formats are supported?
JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, WebP. For best OCR results, use a clear high-resolution image with strong contrast between text and background.
How accurate is the OCR?
Tesseract is the open-source OCR engine that powers most "image to text" tools. Accuracy is excellent for clear printed text (typically 95%+), good for clear handwriting, and degrades with low contrast, blur, unusual fonts, or rotation.
Can I extract text from screenshots?
Yes. Screenshots are usually the easiest case for OCR (high contrast, clean fonts). Useful for grabbing text from videos, paywalled content, or anywhere copy-paste is blocked.
What languages are supported?
English by default. Tesseract supports 100+ languages but we currently configure English only. Get in touch if you need a specific language and we can prioritise it.
Is my image private?
Yes. Image OCR runs server-side (Tesseract is not a browser library). Your image is uploaded, processed in memory, the text is returned, and the file is immediately deleted. See the Privacy Policy for details.
